Climbing Gym Near Me: How to Find the Best Gym for You
Updated: Jun 12, 2019
Having a great climbing gym to call home is extremely beneficial to make you feel safe, stoked, happy, and always looking forward to the next session. I have been beyond lucky to call The Source my home gym for almost three years now. In this article, I'll go over what makes a great climbing gym, so you know what to look for in a climbing gym near you.
QUALITY and QUALITY OF CLIMBS
I would say the most important thing is to have quality climbs that teach you technique and challenge you to become a better overall climber. You want to be at a gym where the setters are consistently giving you climbs to help you improve while creating a fun and enjoyable experience for all levels of climbers. Even better would be a huge gym with a fantastic crew of quality setters, so bigger is better if the quality is still good. You will become a better climber if you go to a smaller gym where all the routes are well set than if you go to a big gym where most of the climbs are just ladders or set with little creativity or intent.
The staff might not be one of the first things that would come to your mind, but it should be. Having a friendly, caring, experienced staff is one of the main things that will make a gym feel like a home and have you looking forward to your next session the second you step out of the gym. I have experienced this first hand, my local gym, The Source Climbing Center has an incredible staff. They are one of the main reasons that I love to go there every week.
DIVERSITY OF CLIMBING TERRAIN
This is where my local gym lacks the most since it's on the smaller side and we don't have very much room to have different angles and features, especially in our bouldering area. The more angles and features a gym has more beneficial to helping you to become a well-rounded climber.
Another hugely important aspect of a gym is how much training equipment does it have. Having some good things to help you warm up or train specific muscles is super helpful. I love that our gym has a treadwall and some equipment to help the warmup process. Also, having a campus and pegboard is an excellent resource to have for training. You would be lucky to find a gym with a moon board, kilter board, or tension board becasue these are incredible assets for your training game.
Those are main things to look for when searching for a great climbing gym in your area. Almost no gym is perfect so try to find the one that best suits your style and goals.
