I LOVE CLIMBING: Climbing Community

Updated: Jun 13, 2019

The climbing community is one of my favorite parts about climbing and probably the main reason I still climb today. It's a great feeling to go to my local gym and know there will be other climbers there to discuss climbing with and climb alongside. Also, there is almost always staff there to ask any training questions or talk about the newly set climbs. Today is going to be a shorter post because I just wanted to share how much I love the climbing community.

One of my favorite examples of the supportive climbing community was from my first ever bouldering competition, Portland Boulder Rally. Since it was my first climbing competition, I came into it very nervous. But when I got there, it felt so inviting. It wasn't at all what I was expecting; people were cheering on fellow competitors that they hadn't ever met before that day. People were discussing beta with me in between climbs, to help me finish boulders I was struggling to send. The whole experience showed me just how great and supportive the climbing community is.

Another great story about the climbing community was during our local gym's climbing league finals. It was one of the final days to come in and score our hardest three climbs for the league finals. My team had made finals and ended up climbing the same time as another team that was in finals. We both were scoring and working on most of the same problems. It was super fun cheering each other on, not just our team, even though we were competing. We would take the lead, and then they would get ahead by a few points; in the end, they finished only one point ahead, so we ended up getting second place in the league. Regardless, it was still one of my favorite climbing moments.

These are just a few of the stories that popped into my head right away when thinking of the climbing community. So next time you are at the gym don't be afraid to say hi or cheer on someone who is working on their project no matter the grade it is. Help keep the climbing community as supportive and welcoming as possible.
